In autumn 2021, DVV International launched the project Urban X-Change Network which is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. The aim of the project is to strengthen cooperation and dialogue between city partners and their adult education institutions with the active participation of civil society. Consequently, the twin cities Coventry and Kiel started the project. “Shared Lives – Connecting Coventry and Kiel Residents” One milestone of the project is to establish an exchange between teachers from both adult education institutions in Coventry and Kiel.

A workshop on the concept of “Flipped Learning” will be the inaugural meeting for the establishment of this exchange.

Flipped learning (also know as flipped classroom) is a relatively new form of teaching approach. Harvard professor, Eric Mazur played a significant role in its development with an instructional strategy he called peer instruction. Mazur published a book in 1997 outlining the strategy, entitled Peer Instruction: A User’s Manual.

Currently, flipped learning is described as a type of blended learning that reverses the traditional educational arrangement by delivering instructional content in advance (online) with classrooms repurposed as a space for active learning

Flipped learning approaches are characterised by:

• a change in use of classroom time
• a change in use of out-of-class time
• doing activities traditionally considered as in-class work out of class
• doing activities traditionally considered ‘homework’ in class
• in-class activities that emphasise active learning and peer learning
• pre-class activities
• post-class activities and
• use of technology, especially video.
